These are projects that need data collected from a region only. A region is defined as an area that is so large that any one person would not be able to visit the entire region to collect data. A region can contain a number of countries/states. Examples: New England area in the USA, the tropic zone, deserts, south east Australia.

These are projects that need data collected from a local area. A local area is defined as an area that any one person would be able to visit the entire area to collect data. Local areas are well defined boundaries. Examples: A city, a small state/county, a watershed area, a national park.
